The Fast & Furious franchise may take longer to reach its destination than we previously thought.
While at the x fast red carpet premiere in Rome on Friday, star Vin Diesel let slip that the eleventh entry in the series might not be the end of the road, as previously confirmed. Now, he said, x fast could be the first of a final trilogy.

“Without taking the hat off too much, I can say this: before making this film, the studio asked if it could be a two-part film,” Diesel said. “And after the studio saw this part 1, they said, ‘Could you do x fastthe finale, a trilogy?'”
“That’s three acts in any story,” added co-star Michelle Rodriguez.
When the reporter tried to get official confirmation, Diesel walked away with Rodriguez. “You’re going to get me in trouble here,” he said, laughing.
Representatives for Universal did not immediately respond to EW’s request for confirmation.
Diesel previously announced last month at CinemaCon that x fast is two movies, with part 2 coming in 2025. x fast director Louis Leterrier has officially signed on to direct the upcoming fast furious film, with Universal describing it as a “companion film” for x fast. This clarification makes much more sense on the heels of Diesel’s new claim.
Diesel previously said he expected the 10th and 11th films to wrap up the main storyline, but that would now expand into a 12th film. Originally, old Fast director Justin Lin had to manage x fast, but he left the project last April, when filming had already begun. Leterrier came to replace him in May.
x fast brings back franchise stars Diesel, Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, John Cena, Jason Statham, Sung Kang, Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren. The film follows Dominic Toretto (Diesel) and his “Fast family” as they face off against a new foe: Jason Momoa’s Dante Reyes. Brie Larson and Meadow Walker Thornton-Allan, the daughter of fire Fast star Paul Walker, are also part of the ensemble cast.
x fast races in theaters on May 19.
