For months, the New England Patriots kept everyone in the dark about their plans.

Most scouts, analysts and fans thought they would take a quarterback with the No. 3 pick, as that was clearly their biggest need.

And with Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye in play, either would have been a great choice.

Still, the Patriots had needs all over the roster, so some thought they might have been convinced to trade up and trade that first-round pick for more draft capital.

That’s why, during the NFL Scouting Combine, New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen reached out to Eliot Wolf to let him know they were interested in a trade (via Savage Sports).

The latest episode of HBO’s Hard Knocks showed Schoen trying to “plant the seed,” and while he tried to play it cool, he made it pretty obvious that he was desperate to get his hands on that pick.

There were many rumors circulating that the Giants were considering teaming up Drake Maye and Brian Daboll.

It seemed like a perfect match, as he had a similar body type and playing style to Josh Allen, and Daboll had been instrumental in his development.

Ultimately, the Patriots stuck to their guns and got the UNC product with the pick, while the Giants took LSU star Malik Nabers at No. 6.

Only time will tell which was the best choice, but that kind of unprecedented access to decision-makers made this season of Hard Knocks one of the best – if not the best – of all time.
