NEW DELHI: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has requested 8-10 days for a detailed response to a notice he received from Delhi Police for his comment during the Bharat Jodo Yatrawhere he stated that “women are always sexually assaulted”.
Sources say the former congressional speaker, in his preliminary response, also blamed the “sudden urgency” shown by law enforcement after a nearly 45-day delay.
In a four-page, 10-point response to the advisory, Rahul questioned the process and procedure adopted by cops 45 days after his speech, sources said.
Calling on the Delhi Police to notice an “unprecedented action”, Rahul asked if it was due to his stance on the Adani problem, sources said.
Earlier on Sunday, Delhi police attended the congress leader’s residence as part of the notice.
Rahul assured the cops that he would share all necessary information about the claims he made during his padyatra speech in Srinagar.
During the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Srinagar, Rahul Gandhi reportedly said, “I heard that women are still being sexually assaulted.
Police had asked him to give details of those victims so that their safety could be assured, officials said.
Calling it a serious matter, Special Police Commissioner Hooda said after Gandhi made his remark, they conducted a local investigation to gather details if a woman had approached Gandhi during the Delhi stage of Yatra at the about their ordeal.
“But no such incident was brought to the attention of our officials and we found no casualties,” the officer said.
Hooda said that after failing to gather any information in this regard, they decided to approach the Congress leader himself and as a result, a notice with a questionnaire was also sent to him seeking details of the victims who approached him about sexual harassment.
It was the third time Gandhi had been approached in this regard, police said, adding that they wanted to open an investigation into the matter as soon as they got details of the victims.
