In May 2023, we received emails from readers who wanted to know if a Portuguese dog named Bobi really was the world’s oldest dog on record.

One of the messages asked: “Is Bobi REALLY the oldest dog? There has been some debate that the photos of young Bobi are not the same dog. Some say they are photos archives. Who is Bobi and how old is he?!”

In February 2023, Guinness World Records was able to verify from two sources that Bobi, a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, was the oldest living dog at 30 and also the oldest dog on record.

Bobi’s date of birth was confirmed by the Veterinary Medical Service of the Municipality of Leiria, which registered Bobi in 1992.

His age was also verified by SIAC, a Portuguese government-authorized pet database managed by SNMV (Sindicato Nacional dos Médicos Veterinários; National Union of Veterinarians).

Guinness information indicates that Bobi was born on May 11, 1992 in the village of Conqueiros in Leiria, Portugal.

Bobi’s owner, Leonel Costa, was eight years old when he was born. He told Guinness he contributed to the pup’s long life in his ‘calm and peaceful environment’ and the fact that he was always free to roam without chains or leashes, including in forests and land. farms that surrounded Costa’s house.

An email we received from a reader included a collage of four photos. The message read: “Newly claimed world’s oldest dog story does not verify. Photos of dog from 1999 are not the same dog as photos from 2022.”

Guinness World Records declared that Bobi, the Portuguese dog, is the oldest dog in the world and also the oldest living dog.
This photo collage was attached to an email by one of our readers.

According to Guinness, these four photos showed Bobi. The top two photos that looked old were dated 1999. The bottom left photo with Bobi and a cat named Ceguinho indicated a date of 2022. The last photo with the person’s hand stroking Bobi with his ears back was dated of 2016. .

More details on Bobi can be found in the February 2023 article on the Guinness website. A second story from May also documented that he was alive for his 31st birthday, an occasion that would have waited for “more than 100 people”.
