iOS 18 revealed: smarter, more personalized and with improved privacy features

Apple’s upcoming iOS 18, scheduled to launch this fall, promises to bring a host of significant improvements to iPhones (and iPads, along with its iPadOS 18 counterpart). Currently available in developer beta, iOS 18 will take center stage at the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference; This new version of the operating system is highlighted by Substantial AI integrations into various applications and featuresmaking them smarter and more efficient than ever.

AI-enhanced Siri, Spotlight search, photos and more

One of the most notable features of iOS 18 is the Improved Siri — With this update, Siri will benefit from major advances in AI, leading to enhanced natural interactions and more conversational capabilities. Siri’s proactive intelligence will be significantly improved, allowing it to handle more complex tasks and offer more personalized assistance. Apple says that over time, Siri will be able to perform multi-step tasks and provide more complete control over individual app functions.

Spotlight Search also gets an upgrade with smarter results that incorporate broader system information. This means finding what you need on your device will be faster and more intuitive. In the Messages app, users can expect auto-completed sentences, custom emojis generated based on message contentAnd AI-generated summaries of missed messagesmaking communication smoother and more engaging.

The Photos app will present AI-powered photo editing, allowing users to easily remove unwanted objects from their images. Apple Music will benefit from automatically generated playlists tailored to users’ listening habits.

Email and messaging experience will be improved with suggested answers and smart summaries, which facilitates effective communication management. Additionally, the Notes and Voice Memos apps will offer enhanced transcription and summarization capabilities.

Personalization to the Android

Personalization and design are key goals of iOS 18; The home screen will be more customizable, with options for the application placing the icon anywhere on the grid and the ability to choose custom colors, somewhat similar to what we have on Android.

This will give users greater control over the appearance of their devices. The Control Center will also see a redesign with a more customizable layout, and the Settings app will be streamlined for easier navigation and improved search functionality.

Password enforcement and Safari improvements

New apps and features are also on the horizon. A dedicated Passwords app will simplify access to login information, building on the existing iCloud Keychain functionality. Safari is set to get a major overhaul with a smart search option that uses on-device AI technology to identify key topics and phrases on web pages, offering quick summaries.

Improved security and privacy

Security and privacy remain in focus with iOS 18. AI features will use a combination of on-device processing and cloud servers, with a strong emphasis on security. Apple’s Secure Enclave will ensure that data processed on cloud servers is isolated and protected. There is also a new Wi-Fi address rotation functionwhich changes your Wi-Fi address at random times to improve privacy.

This helps reduce tracking by preventing your address from systematically appearing on other devices on the same network. This feature is separate from the Limit IP Address Tracking option available for Mail and Safari, providing an extra layer of privacy protection.

Is my iPhone compatible?

In terms of compatibility, iOS 18 will work on all iPhones that support iOS 17 (although some features are exclusive to newer models, like the iPhone 15 Pro and beyond). The launch schedule includes a preview at WWDC on June 10, followed by beta testing by developers, with a public release expected in September 2024.

We can’t deny that iOS 18 is intended to make iPhones and iPads more intelligent, customizable and secure, reflecting Apple’s significant investment in AI and improving user experience.
