The successor of Edge Plus (2022) and the Edge 30 Ultra (2022)new Motorola Edge Plus (2023) will be a serious competitor for Google Pixel 7 Proand the OnePlus 11 both launched a few months ago at $899 And $699, respectively.

On the connectivity side, the Edge Plus 2023 offers 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, And WiFi 7 support.

At this price
and looking at the hardware specs of the camera in light of our CAMERA HW score, Motorola’s new flagship looks like a great Samsung Galaxy S23 alternative. The Samsung device launched at $999 in February with a smaller screen (6.1 inches), slower display refresh rate (120Hz), slower charging speed and no charger provided.

I had the opportunity to get my hands on the device at Motorola headquarters in Chicago and here are my first impressions.

Design

During the presentation, the Motorola spokesperson touted the new Edge Plus “design of four curved glasses” made of Gorilla Glass Diet on the front and back panels, and built inside an aluminum frame. There is only one color option available on the interstellar black, shown in our photos.

THE Edge Plus 2023 could not claim the flagship title without a IP68 certificateThis protects against immersion in fresh water up to 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes and the fact dust and sand resistant.

The triple rear camera system is equipped with a 50 MP main wide angleA 50 MP ultra wide shooter with macro abilities, and a 12 MP telephoto lens with 2X optical zoom for portraits. Only the wide angle lens gets Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and apertures range from f/1.8 to f/2.2 and f/1.6, respectively.

By using our Benchmark CAMERA HW, We can rank the quality of this camera system solely on the basis of technical specifications, but we have proven that there is a direct relationship between hardware quality and image capture quality.

THE Motorola Edge Plus 2023 has a Ubergizmo CAMERA HW score of 172 which is slightly higher than the Galaxy S23 To 166 but lower than Google Pixel 7 Prowho deliver a 191 CAMERA HW score. THE OnePlus 11 is slightly higher than 178.

Its 48 MP telephoto lens with OIS and 5X optics gave an advantage At Pixel 7 pro on the Motorola Edge Plus 2023 for the final overall score. Many OEMs today tend to cut back on optical zoom features to cut costs, as consumers don’t use these lenses as much as wide-angle and ultra-wide shooters.

Video capabilities are quite goodyou can save up to 8K UHD at 30 fps4K UHD

(60/30 fps), FHD (60/30 fps), 4K UHD HDR10+ (30 fps) and FHD slow motion (960/240/120 fps). Motorola has developed new video modes, including Night Vision, Horizon Lock (stabilization even when rotating 360 degrees for extreme sports), autofocus tracking (keeps the subject in focus even when moving), and video portrait (bokeh effect in the background).

System and software performance

We expect the Motorola Edge Plus 2023 to deliver top-notch system performancethanks to its flagship Qualcomm SoC, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The system is based on 8GB LPDDR5X RAM and either 256 GB Or 512 GB of internal storage.

We haven’t run the benchmarks, but expect the phone to rank among the best Android smartphones of 2023, measured on Geekbench (CPU) and GFX Bench (graphics performance).

The latest and most powerful Snapdragon chip allows the new Motorola smartphone to offer 40% better energy efficiency than the previous model.

The device ships with Android 13 and will get three years of Android upgrades, and is compatible with Lenovo ThinkReality A3 smart glasses.

Battery

The massive 5100mAh The battery should offer great battery life, as it’s larger than those we find in most of its flagship competitors (most high-end devices have 5000mAh). One of the features we like the most is the 68W TurboPower fast charging adapter included.

Motorola claims a day of battery life in just 9 minutes of charging. Since the OEM mentioned 2-day battery life, we’re guessing we could get around 50% charge in 9 minutes. We have yet to verify the claim in real life.

Finally, the Edge Plus 2023 is also capable of 15W wireless charging and 5W wireless power sharing.
