Ford hopes people will download an app to avoid being hit by their cars

Imagine: the only thing standing between you and the front grill of this truck could be a phone app.

The year is 2022. Cars have bluetooth. The phones have bluetooth. So, logically(?), Ford asks: Can Bluetooth protect pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable non-car people from being hit by its vehicles?

The automaker is developing a phone app that will alert drivers to the presence of bikers, pedestrians or scooters nearby using location alerts sent via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology. Or at least, drivers will be notified of the presence of the app users.

People who have downloaded the Ford-specific widget and have it actively running on their phones will appear as “beacons” to drivers with Ford’s Sync infotainment system. If these app users are in the path of vehicles and there is potential for a crash, drivers will be alerted via dashboard screen graphics or sounds.

Ford is set to demonstrate its app for the first time at the Intelligent Transportation Association of America World Congress this week. The application will be used to support the existence of the company Advanced driver assistance systemwhich can already intervene when a driver fails to react to obstacles in time.

“Newer Ford vehicles already equipped with Ford Co-Pilot360 technology can detect and help warn drivers of pedestrians, bicyclists, scooter riders and others — and even apply the brakes if drivers don’t react in time,” said Jim Butchkowski, a Ford executive, in Society News for the media. “We are now looking at ways to extend the vehicle’s sensing capability, to areas that drivers cannot see, to help people drive more confidently on roads that are increasingly shared with others using their two feet or two wheels.”

Car manufacturers are investing more and more in technologies for self-driving, autonomous or with the help of drivers. But cars are equipped with these features still crashingAnd still kill people.

Ford’s press release cites the A growing number of traffic, cyclists and Pedestrian fatalities as an impetus for the development of the application. Note: One of the factors contributing to the increase in the number of deaths is The popularity of SUVs and large trucks, which Ford sells better in the US than any other car manufacturer.

However, as Report from Engadget first noted that it’s hard to imagine that something like Ford’s app could solve the problem of increasing pedestrians mortality. How many people will be willing to download More A location tracking app, for the purpose of Can and should Get a better response by changes in policy and infrastructure?
