Suzume no Tojimari (Suzume’s Locking Up) was one of director Makoto Shinkai’s most anticipated fantasy adventure anime. Nanoka Hara was cast as the voice of Suzume with an open audition. The new adaptation of this film was written by director Makoto Shinkai himself and was released on August 24, 2022.

Suzume no Tojimari was only released in theaters due to its huge success. The studio didn’t want to misappropriate the revenue.
Worldwide distribution rights for Suzume no Tojimari have been purchased by Crunchyroll with the exception of Asia where Crunchyroll will be partnered with Sony. It has been reported that the distribution of this dark fantasy anime will begin in the early months of 2023. Suzumi’s online release date has yet to be given by Crunchyrolls.

Suzume no Tojimari premiered in Japan on November 11, 2022 and has since sold millions of tickets in Japan alone. The online release date of this dark fantasy anime is not yet known, but it has been reported that it will be distributed by Crunchyrolls in the first months of 2023.
Plot of Suzume no Tojimari
Seventeen-year-old Suzume meets a strange man who is looking for a special door. The duo together discover the special door of an old abandoned house located in the mountains. With captivating force, Suzume is pulled towards the handle. Stepping through the gate, this teenager opens a portal to the unknown, and other similar gates begin to appear across Japan. Now, Suzume must travel across Japan, whether through the mountains or across the sea, to close each of these gates to prevent the Gate of Disaster from destroying Japan.
